Classmates.com sued by user who had no friends

Posted By bran on November 12th, 2008

From the Wired article:

When Classmates.com told user Anthony Michaels last Christmas Eve that his former school chums were trying to contact him, he pulled out his wallet and upgraded to the premium membership that would let him contact long-lost fifth-grade dodge-ball buddies and see if his secret crush from high school had looked him up online.

But once he’d parted with the $15, Michaels learned the shocking truth: No one he knew was trying to contact him at all. Classmates.com’s come-on was a lie, and he’d been scammed.

Now he’s suing for being unpopular…oh and lied to. It’s been a while since classmates.com has been in the media circuit so I guess any news is good news?

Interesting news about classmates.com, one of the original social networking sites that just about everyone is a member. Problem is that no one I know has become a paying “gold member” so they can actually do anything on the site other than look at profiles. To me, classmates.com has become kind of a joke and made a huge mistake in not employing a free advertisment based business model like myspace.com or facebook.com as it still holds onto the subscription based revenue model. It does claims to have “40 million registered user” which I am not sure if I believe.

Rogers Pumpkin Patrol – 23 years really?

Posted By bran on October 17th, 2008

I’ve always had a certain disdain for Rogers and that fact they’ve pretty much taken control of the media in Canada but I just saw on the news today that they run a “Pumpkin Patrol” on Halloween :

And for the 23rd straight year, the Rogers Pumpkin Patrol will be going out along with them to ensure they don’t get into anything too scary. The safety guardians gave an annual preview of their handiwork at Toronto Police Headquarters Friday, revealing there will be 150 vans and 300 employees fanning out across the GTA on October 31st to keep an eye out when your kids don’t.

It’s a great service but what shocks me is that it’s in it’s 23rd year! Seriously??!!? It’s the first I’ve ever heard of it and I am still young enough to remember going trick or treating.

Buddy working in Kuwait

Posted By bran on October 14th, 2008

Been bit lazy about posting but just found out recently a good buddy of mine is now teaching with his wife over in Kuwait! Still in a bit of shock but cheers to him as long as they stay safe of course.

They’ve set up a blog too but it probably won’t be updated too often but gives you a different perspective from the “other side” of things.  http://daenaandgabetravel.blogspot.com/

Google Chrome – the New Browser Killer?

Posted By bran on September 2nd, 2008

Google has just released today its’ beta broswer Google Chrome. Some have already dubbed it the “Browser Killer”.  I’ve been an avid Firefox user since the beginning, making the early switch from Internet Explorer to Firefox and am very curious as to how Google’s attempt at the browser market will be.

So far very impressed. Very clean, simple and this thing is FAST.  Some cool features include:

  • Very clean and minimalistic approach
  • Quick search as part of address bar
  • Unique home page that displays your most visited sites in mini screenshot layouts
  • Incognito browsing, aka Porn View - Pages you view in this window won’t appear in your browser history and they won’t leave other traces, like cookies, on your computer
  • Did I already mention it is FAST?

Missing:

  • Minimal customization and advanced settings (at least that I can see right now)
  • No add ons or extensions
  • Something is a bit off with the scrolling

Overall, very impressed with Chrome in the little amount that I have used it. I still love my Firefox with it’s addons and customization but Chrome is giving me a run for the money as my go to browser. Even in it’s beta stage, it’s already a worthy competitor.  In typical Google fashion, how long will it stay in beta? 1 year or 5??

Note: I posted this via Google Chrome.

Rogers Hijacking DNS Server Error Pages PART II

Posted By bran on August 24th, 2008

As a followup to my previous post, I noted that Rogers has provided a opt out for their “custom Rogers/Yahoo” search page. I was a little too soon to give them credit for it as I proceeded to select the opt out option and now I see this standard Internet Explorer looking “Cannot find server” page. BUT – notice the url address is http://www20.search.rogers.com/not_found. Rogers has simply created a fake Cannot find server page as their version of opting out of their service. What a joke. Rogers does it again!

Rogers Hijacking DNS Server Error Pages

Posted By bran on August 20th, 2008

I had heard that Canadian ISPs had begun to customer error pages with there own custom error page laced with their corporate advertising. This apparently pushes the net neutrality limits, in fact some claim it violates it.

I first noticed Rogers hijacking my browser when it first implemented it’s 60GB download cap per month. Once I reached 75% usage, a message would appear at the top of browser page indicating this with a check box to confirm I had read the message. Now I just noticed today that typing in www.asfdasd.com (or any other domain that does not exist) will yield you a custom Rogers/Yahoo Search page.

Rogers Hijack

One thing that I noticed on the bottom was a link to “Learn More About this Page” which provides an opt out option:

These search results were provided because the domain name you entered into the address bar is either improperly formatted, currently unavailable, nonexistent, or part of a key word search. Rogers Supported Search Results is a service designed to enhance your web surfing experience by eliminating many of the error pages you encounter as you surf.

No software was installed on your computer for this service to work.
Click here if you would no longer like to receive the Rogers Supported Search Results service.

I’ve never been happy with Rogers. In fact, my disdain has become worse and worse lately with many of their actions. I’ll at least give them credit for providing an opt out option which I have just done.

You have successfully changed the selected landing page returned from the Rogers Supported Search Results service. If you would like to revert back to the default results page, simply delete your “search.rogers.com” cookie or return to options.search.rogers.com

NOTE: If you delete your cookies, or use a program that deletes cookies, you will have to repeat this process every time your cookies are deleted.

Unfortunately, all it does it put a cookie on your system. Every time you delete your cookies you’ll have to repeat the process of manually opting out. Sad Rogers, just sad.

It aggregates various RSS feeds from a number of music sources, put together in just one page to give music lovers an easy way to see whats upcoming around Toronto. It also includes local concert reviews.  It’s worth checking out any one who’s into the rich Toronto concert scene.

Technical problems over at CP24.com

Posted By bran on August 10th, 2008

Looks like changes are coming over at cp24.com – See screenshot as of 8am, August 10th, 2008. It looks like it’s currently under some kind of redevelopment that hasn’t quite gone as smooth as planned. Interesting that a Java exception was thrown but not handled properly so it gives you a bit of an idea as to what technologies they are employing.

Also notice the “CTV” favicon now. Makes sense since they have recently taken over CHUM Limited and maintain control of CP24. This site was previously redirecting to citynews.ca

On to the 2nd Round poker tournament for a trip to Las Vegas

Posted By bran on July 8th, 2008

Poker Pro and fellow Canadian Daniel Negreanu is offering a Weekend With Daniel competition in Las Vegas:

The weekend includes a trip to Las Vegas, where you’ll get to stay at the Venetian Hotel and party with the man himself in true VIP style. Daniel will also invite you to his Vegas home, to teach you the skills you need to make it as a poker champion. The prize package is worth $17,000 in total!

Basically you have to first qualify in a daily WWD Round 1 freeroll.  Players that finish in the top 1,000 will go through to our WWD Round 2 tournament.

I just played the WWD Round 1 this evening with a total of 1458 players in the poker tournament. I literally played 2 hands and folded everything else.  Believe it or not, I qualified by doing nothing. I don’t know what the 458 idiots were doing but somehow they busted out. How hard can it be to make the top 1000??

So it’s on to Round 2 and I’ll let you know how that goes.  I imagine that I may actually have to play poker to get to the final round.
